After completing 40 years of trekking in Himalayas, Youth Hostel Association of India presents yet again National Himalayan Trekking Expedition-Sar Pass in the Parvati Valley of Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh.
Sar Pass is one of the most popular trails in the Shivalik Range of mighty Himalayas. Parvati Valley abounds in natural beauty with snow-clad mountains, perennial rivulets and streams waterfalls, picturesque meadows in the midst of dense forests of Devdar and Fir trees, which beckon the young adventure lover to come and experience the serene and calm atmosphere of all pervading nature. Himachal Pradesh, known as the land of Gods and Goddesses, is ultimate destination for adventure sports and trekking through Himalayans on beautiful trails which take one to an altogether different world. Sar Pass Trail offers an opportunity to enjoy the exquisite beauty of Parvati Valley.

Kasol will be base camp. It is famous for its cool and pleasant climate with tall pine trees. The trekkers will pass through the first camp Guna Panni (Euden Garden), which is surrounded by snow-clad peaks and looks like melten gold at the time of sunrise and sunset. Ghural Jyot, Unch Dhaar, Hattigarh Top, Nakhthaan Top and Manikaran valley are visible from here, Himalayan medicinal herbs are organically grown here.

The trekkers reaches second camp Fual Panni after crossing Poo and Kangchani Thatch. A Thatch is a vast ground with varied flora and fauna. Fual means shephered and panni means water.
Third camp Zirmi presents the view of Rudra Naag top, Tosh Nullah and Khirganga. Rukhaau Thatch and Bakkar Thatch are good resting points before reaching. After crossing Ruari Thatch trekkers come to the
Fourth camp Tilatoni, the highest point SAR PASS is heaven on earth presenting a spectacular view of Mann Talaai,Bijli Mahadev hills. After descending through Biskeri and Bhandak Thatch one is finally back to civilization at Barshani.


Purpose Of The Programme
The purpose of the programme is to expose the YHAI members to a greater adventure and to rough out the rigours of plodding through snow with a sense of love for nature and outdoor recreational activity aiming at promoting national integration.

Schedule
Day 1 : Report at Base Camp (Youth Hostel Kasol) Ht. 6500 ft.
Day 2 : Acclimatization and Orientation
Day 3 : Rock Climbing & Reppelling
Day 4 : By bus Unch Dhaar (10 kms) 1 hr. and Trek to Youth Hostel Guna Paani Via Shila Village Ht. 8000 ft. (5 kms) 5 hrs.
Day 5 : Trek to Youth Hostel Funal Paani – Ht. 9500 ft. (05 kms) 6 hrs.
Day 6 : Trek to Youth Hostel Zirmi – Ht. 11000 ft.(06 kms) hrs.
Day 7 : Trek to Youth Hostel Tila Lotni – Ht. 12500 ft. (06 kms) 6 hrs
Day 8 : Trek to Youth Hostel Biskeri Thatch – Ht. 11000 ft. via Sar Pass (13800 ft.) (09 kms) 7 hrs
Day 9 : Trek to Youth Hostel Bhandak Thatch – Ht. 8000 ft. (10 kms) 6 hrs.
Day 10 : Trek up to Barshani Road head, transfer by bus to Manikaran and trek up to Base Camp Kasol, Valedictory function.
Day 11 : Group breaks after breakfast. Programme Schedule and routes are subject to change without prior notice.


Dates

You may choose to report at the base camp on any day from 1st May to 31st May 2010.

Age
Minimum age is 15 years. Age restriction will be strictly adhered to. Under age will not be considered in any case.

Things To Bring Along With You
Rucksacks (if you have one), cotton shirts, cotton pants, woolen jersey of jacket, woolen muffler or monkey cap, light raincoat, DMS or hunter shoes, 2 pairs socks, water bottle, lunch box, enameled or steel mug or tumbler, plate, spoon, water purifying tablets, pen-knifs, needle, thread, spare buttons goggles (other than blue glasses), cold cream or Vaseline, soap, toilet paper, towel, medicines which you normally use at home.

Fees

Participation fee Rs.2650/- + Rs.150/- Development Fund = Rs.2800/- per head which will cover stay in tented accommodation, simple nutritious vegetarian food, guidance, equipments and insurance. You will however, bear the to and fro travel expenses from your hometown to the base camp and back.
Note 1 : YHAI trekking expeditions are not subsidized by any Government agencies or donors.
Note 2 : Development fund will be utilized for the infrastructural improvement of the campsite and equipment.
Imp - YHAI Group insurance cover is for accidental death or permanent disability only. You are advised to take insurance cover for your journey and other related matters.

Where To Report

For Sar Pass trail, our base camp is at Kasol which is linked by road to Kullu-via-Bhuntar, it is 5 kms short of Manikaran, famous for hot water springs. Regular bus services are available from Kullu and Bhuntar to reach Kasol, Direct buses are also available to Manikaran from Chandigarh and other parts of Punjab. Nearest railheads are Joginder Nagar, Pathankot and Chandigarh. Nearest airport is Bhuntar. Deluxe, semi deluxe and ordinary night/day buses are available from Delhi, Chandigarh and other parts of Punjab to Kullu/Bhuntar.


Safety

Extensive and painstaking preparations have gone into the planning of trek routes for your safety. Our field staff and experienced camp leaders have been visiting the area to check all details. While every care has been taken to ensure safety, Youth Hostels Association of India cannot be held responsible for any accident, illness and such other unforeseen eventualities. Smoking, use of alcohols and narcotics of any description are strictly prohibited during the course of the programme. Deviating from the set route of the programme is not permitted. If participants desire to join any other activity, they may do so at their own responsibility and risk only after finishing the trek and checking out.

How To Apply
Members desires of joining this programme may apply on a prescribed Registration Form duly supported by a Medical Certificate, along with DD of requisite amount in favour of National Secretary, YHAI payable at New Delhi. Certificate
Participants, who successfully complete the trek and abide by the discipline of the programme, will be awarded certificate.

Cancellation
In case you are unable to join the trek after paying the participation fee, you will get a refund of Rs.1325/- provided your request is received directly in the National Office at least 7 days in advance from the date of your reporting. No refund will, however, be admissible if such notice is short of 7 days. Any unforeseen event/strike or natural calamity will not be considered as a cause of cancellation.

Adventure Scholarships For The Handicapped Youths
YHAI announces 50 adventure scholarships of Rs.1325/- each to handicapped youths including deaf and dump for this expedition. Deserving participants may apply to the National Office, YHAI on a plain paper supported by relevant medical certificate.

Special Casual Leave
The Trekking Expedition organized by Youth Hostels Association of India have the approval of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, (Deptt. Of Personnel and Training), Government of India, vide office Order No.280016/89-Estt(A), dated 25th October, 1989. Participants working in Central Government organizations can apply to the authorities concerned for availing special casual leave for the duration of the expedition. This leave can be sanctioned by their office upto 30 days in calendar year.

Photographic Competition

We are sure while trekking you generally comes across views which have a deep impression on your mind and brain. For keeping a permanent record of such lasting impressions, you would like to capture them in your Camera. We felicitate such delightful scenes. You may send your colour prints (not slides) in the size 8'' x 10 The themes of photographic entries are:
(a) Nature (Wildlife, Birds and Flowers)
(b) Camping
(c) Trekking Please do not forget to give details of the location and date of photograph, your Name, Group No. and address on the reverse of the photograph (preferably type on a paper and paste). Perhaps you may be the lucky one to get a cash award and/or a Certificate of Merit.

YHAI has the right to retain/use even the entries which are not selected for award with due acknowledgement/ compensation. Last date for submitting entries is 31st July, 2010. YOUR ATTENTION . Please note that this is an environment friendly trek. Do not litter any wrappers or spoil the trail in any way. In case you find any wrapper, plastic bag or anything left by trekkers on the way, please carry the same with you and deposit at the base camp.

Warning
WARNING Burning of wood during camp fire is strictly prohibited. Import of any Bio Non-Degradable Material in Himachal Pradesh is an offence.
