* About Program:

•       Embarking on a journey of India’s remote state of Sikkim is a tumultuous but rewarding one. The infinite variety of its geographic setting, its topography, its varied flora and fauna and avian life, the history of its people and the variety of its ethnic communities and their rich heritage of ancient traditions and lifestyles, its festivals and crafts make it a travelers wonderland that’s just begging to be discovered afresh.

Sikkim is surrounded by Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and State of West Bengal. It has a small stretch of rugged land just 115 km by 65 km. By travelling a few hours within Sikkim one can traverse from sultry tropical to temperate and then to alpine climate and from almost sea level to 18000 ft. It also hosts the third highest peak in the world, Mt. Kangchendzonga. Sikkim has only 0.2% of area of India but has 26% of its biodiversity – species of flora and fauna – wild animals like marmots and the red panda, a wide range of flora from primulas to orchids. The pristine and unspoiled natural beauty includes alpine landscapes and thick luxuriant tropical forests, rivers in torrents and peaceful lakes – a true Shangrila and a veritable kaleidoscope.

To create a love for the countryside and provide an avenue of returns to the rural folk, we at YHAI Maharashtra have decided to initiate village home stay programmes in Sikkim. We find this as a win-win situation because the tourist gets an authentic feel of the area, away from the hustle-bustle of other pockets in the state thronged by tourists, while for the villager; life becomes a bit more sustainable.

To start with, only two villages have been selected for the excursion programme. Out of the eight nights of the programme, four will be spent in two beautiful villages, Kitam and Tingvong of Sikkim. The Panchayats (Local self government bodies) of the both the villages have approved the plan and are eager to host tourists. Villagers will try to prepare separate room with toilet for the home stay. A group of family / 2-3 persons will be the guest of one family. Host villager will look after their guest and also provide food to them. The designated Village Guide will provide information about the village and surrounding places to the guests.

For the evenings, villagers will perform a traditional cultural programme for the tourist friends. This will develop personal bonding between host villager and the guest Youth Hosteller.
